Tax Credit
A tax credit reduces the tax you owe, dollar for dollar. A tax deduction only reduces the income you are taxed on, so it cuts your bill by less. Some credits are refundable: after tax hits zero, leftover is paid out. A nonrefundable credit stops at zero. The U.S. Earned Income Tax Credit and Canada Workers Benefit are refundable; you get them only if you file a return.
