A concept where a lawsuit is “settled” between the parties involved before it goes to court to be decided by a judge or jury. Settlements are cheaper than court-mandated resolutions and can include confidentiality or no-fault provisions of the settlement agreement (so the person or company being sued can pay out the settlement without ever legally admitting wrongdoing).
