Reserve Requirement

Reserve Requirement

A banking concept where a bank must keep a certain percentage of its total deposits “in reserve” (in its physical bank vault or on deposit at the Federal Reserve Bank), not loaned out. The idea behind reserve requirements is that it helps provide stability for a bank even if some of their outstanding loans are not able to be repaid, without threatening the deposits of savers at that bank.
