Record of Employment (ROE)
When you leave a job, the government needs a record of your pay and why the job ended before unemployment benefits can start. In Canada that document is a Record of Employment (ROE). Your employer must send it to Service Canada. Keep a copy. Without it, an Employment Insurance claim can stall even if you otherwise qualify. The United States has no single national ROE. You file for unemployment insurance with your state, which already has wage reports from your employer. Some states also give you a separation notice to keep with your pay stubs.
