Progressive Discipline
Progressive discipline is a workplace process that gives you chances to fix a problem before you lose the job. A first late shift or a small mistake usually starts with a warning, not a firing. If the problem continues, the response gets more serious: a written warning, then unpaid time off, then termination. Union contracts often require this ladder. Many non-union employers use it too. Serious misconduct, such as theft or violence, can still skip the early steps.
