Opportunity Cost
Opportunity cost is the value of the next-best option you give up when you choose something else. It is separate from the price on the receipt. If you spend $1,000 on a new phone instead of investing that money, the opportunity cost is the interest you will not earn over the years you keep the phone. That interest is part of what the purchase really costs.
