Market Failure

Market Failure

Market failure is a condition in which prices, supply, and demand fail to produce an outcome society wants. An externality is a common cause: a cost or benefit that lands on someone who was not part of the deal. A factory can sell at a low price while the neighborhood downwind bears the health cost of its pollution. That cost never enters the price, so the buying and selling do not fix it.
