Deductible

Deductible

A deductible is the amount you must pay out of pocket on a covered claim before the insurance company starts paying. For example, if your homeowners policy has a $500 deductible and a TV is destroyed, you pay the first $500. Deductibles exist so you share some of the risk. Choosing a higher deductible usually lowers your premium, but it also means a larger bill if you file a claim.
