Bonds

Bonds

A bond is a loan an investor makes to a company or a government. The issuer pays interest on a schedule and, at maturity, pays back the amount borrowed. Maturity is the date the loan ends. Bonds are often issued in amounts of $1,000. Owning a bond does not make you an owner of the company.
