Auto-deposit and direct deposit both put money in your account without a paper cheque, but they are not the same. Direct deposit is how an employer or the government pays you on a schedule, using your institution, transit, and account numbers.

Auto-deposit is an Interac e-Transfer setting: if you have it on, money sent to your email or phone lands immediately with no security question. One is payroll and benefits; the other is person-to-person Interac.
