Amortization

Amortization

Amortization divides the repayment of a loan into equal payments over several years. Each payment covers interest plus part of the amount borrowed. Early payments go mostly toward interest, and later payments go mostly toward principal, until the balance is gone. A mortgage works this way. Amortization also means spreading a cost over the years an item is used, such as a patent or a phone.
