Social Insurance Number

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is the nine-digit number that links you to Canada’s tax and benefit systems. A new employer needs it to report your pay, pension contributions, and tax. Apply through Service Canada. Guard it the way you would a bank password. Someone who has it can open credit or claim benefits in your name.

Share it when the law requires it, such as a job or a bank. A real agency will not ask you to confirm your full SIN in a surprise email or text. In the United States the counterpart is a Social Security Number (SSN).
