Mortgage Default Insurance

Mortgage Default Insurance

Mortgage default insurance is coverage that pays the lender if a homeowner stops making mortgage payments. Lenders require it when the down payment is small, because a high loan-to-value ratio leaves them with less cushion if the loan goes unpaid. The buyer usually pays the premium through the mortgage. In Canada, this insurance often comes from CMHC or a private insurer.
