Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) is a federal Crown corporation that, among other roles, provides mortgage default insurance. If you borrow more than 80% of a home’s value, federal rules require this insurance from CMHC or a private insurer. The insurance protects the lender if you default; it does not protect you as the buyer.
