Vesting
Vesting is the schedule that turns an employer’s retirement contributions into the employee’s money. Contributions you make yourself are yours as soon as they go in. The employer’s match becomes yours over time, often after a set number of years. If you leave before that schedule is finished, you can lose the part of the match that has not vested yet.
